San Antonio school districts offer many Magnet schools created to allow students the opportunity to take specialized courses in areas from fine arts and foreign languages to health careers and science. The popularity is based, in part, on the freedom it gives parents and students to choose what school they attend.

Programs for Academically Gifted Children

Gifted and talented education, as well as academic enrichment classes, are offered city-wide. The Alamo Heights, Edgewood, Harlandale, Judson, North East, Northside, and San Antonio Independent School Districts all support programs for students who display academic leadership. Some districts begin programs at the kindergarten level, while others place emphasis on high school students. These programs promote self-awareness and the development of strong cognitive skills.

San Antonio Prep

The San Antonio Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) is an academically intense eight-week summer program that stresses the development of abstract reasoning skills, problem-solving skills, and career opportunities in engineering and science. The curriculum includes study and research work in mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science and technical writing. The purpose of the program is to identify high-achieving middle and high school students with the potential and interest in becoming engineers and scientists.

San Antonio Education Partnership Program

The San Antonio Education Partnership encourages excellence in academics and empowers students in their efforts to attend college. Students attending target campuses receive a scholarship to a local college or university upon fulfillment of a high school degree, an 80 grade point average and 95% attendance rate. They accomplish this with the participation of local businesses, government, neighborhood and church communities. Since its inception in 1989, the Education Partnership has helped over 25,000 students. Funding for scholarships is provided primarily by the private sector through an Adopt-A-School Program and special contributions.
